Over the Top

Posted by: lynn | Comments (1)

Rachel over at Tales of My Thirties gave me a blog award–woot, my first!–the “(Your Blog is) Over The Top!” Award. I met Rachel at a pre-Blogher ’09 meet up last summer, and she let me share her room. Rachel has become an adopter of Schmutzie’s 365 Days of Grace in Small Things project, like me. She’s a sweetheart and a great writer. And, she said really nice things about me:

Lynn at Human Being Blog, is spending the first two weeks of 2010 writing about her decade in the aughts.  As someone else commented, it is like a mini-memoir that deserves publishing.  Just as Lee Ann does, Lynn’s writing challenges me to be a better writer, to discover that inner writer that is inside somewhere.   Her conversations in person are animated, talking with her eyes and body as well as her mouth.  I like that.

With this award, I’m to complete a one-word meme, and then nominate three others for the award. Thank you, Rachel, for the gift!

And now for my awardees

Jen Lee of jenlee.net. I found Jen on the ShutterSisters’ website last summer. She inspires me through her photographic storytelling and her new journey of leading writers to write. She’s an inspiration to me in following your bliss.

Britt of missbritt.com. Britt is one of the lifebloggers I read daily. Not only is she a beautiful writer, she is painfully honest about her life. She is real.

Jessica Bern of bernthis.com. Jessica is a professional comedienne living in LA. Her blog makes me laugh out loud. She’s a mommy blogger of a different bent, making fun of herself as a mother in a way that makes all the trials and tribulations of being responsible for another human being seem do-able, even when you screw up.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda

I can’t…

Hit a moving object with another moving object (ball-racquet/ball-bat, etc.). Grow my hair past my shoulders. Resist anything with cherries in it … or stop eating a bag of bing cherries until the last one is gone. Hide without giggling (crappy hide-n-seek player). Resist checking my email many times a day. Swallow pills easily, but I take a handful of supplements each day.

I can..

Eat lemons straight, usually without puckering. Sing, play the piano, dance and write. Talk in front of large groups of people without nerves (but get nervous talking to small groups). Feng shui a room. Create one hell of a spreadsheet. Write your resume (for a fee). Be quite messy. Sleep 10 hours a night.

I won’t…

Give up hope. Stop  occasionally sleeping with a stuffed animal. Act my age. Stop learning. Believe other people’s opinions of me–good or bad (at least I’m working on this). Watch sports on TV. Watch commercials on TV or listen to them on the radio. Get off my soapbox about skin cancer prevention (stay out of the freaking tanning beds people!). Believe everything I read or hear without investigating it myself.

I will…

Keep taking photos and getting better at it. Write this blog. Write a novel. Go to the gym at least three days a week. Keep an open mind. Love my daughter forever. Eat more veggies and less wheat and sugar. Figure out how to live healthier. Watch American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars until they go off the air. Go to Africa for a month. See Paris, New York (again), Costa Rica, Maui (again), Rio and Zihuatanejo in my lifetime.

I shouldn’t…

Should myself to death. You either will or you won’t.

I should…

Listen to my own advice, above.

Inspired by this.

May Meme

Posted by: lynn | Comments (1)

I read this meme over on Schmutzie’s blog, and even though she didn’t EXPLICITLY say at the end of her blog, “Hey, lynn @human, being, why don’t you copy me today by reproducing this fabulous meme I was nominated to do over on some very famous blog,” I’m gonna copy it anyway. The rules of this meme are as follows:

- Respond to and rework the meme.

- Answer the questions on your own blog

- Replace one question and add one question.

- link back

What are your current obsessions?
Figuring out where I can beg, borrow and steal money from so I can a) pay off my debt so I b) have enough cashflow to pay all of the house bills and my own living expenses so c) Steve can quit his job. Oh, and cheese.

What’s for dinner?

Who knows? I’m going out with Laurel. It will be fun to see where we land.

What is your greatest fear at the moment?
That I’ll lose my job.

What are you listening to?
Sarah Barreilles’ Little Voice. I really love every single song on this album. Her voice is caramel.

If you were a god/goddess what would you be?
I would be the goddess of retribution and forgiveness. I’d give people a choice between getting back at the person/s who hurt them in some creative and devastating (to them) way, and forgiving themselves and the person. I think it would be fun to see who chose the path to hell vs the path to heaven.

What are your favourite holiday spots?
Playa del Carmen, Vail, Winter Park, Napa.

What are you reading right now?
I picked up American Wife by Curtis Sittenfield , and I’m loving it. My reading adventure on that novel got interrupted by two straight days of reading Breaking Dawn, the final book in the Twilight series, which was a satisfying read.

What are four words that describe you?
creative. impatient. thoughtful. single-minded.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Watching Ghost Hunters. Lurking on others’ blogs. Eating donuts on Sundays after I work out.

Who or what makes you laugh?
Daisy Weasel. When she’s all revved up and dooking and bouncing and hopping into things, she can make me laugh until I cry.

What is your favourite spring thing to do?
Take all the plastic off our windows and let the breeze carry away all those pent-up house smells that accumulate during the winter, and swap out my cold weather clothes for my warm weather clothes. It’s like getting a whole new wardrobe!

Where are you planning to travel next?
Allegedly, to Santa Fe for my birthday in June, then Tampa in mid-July for a business trip.

What is the best thing you ate or drank lately?
In Philly, we went to lunch El Vez in Philadelphia. There, I had hands down the best guacamole I’ve ever eaten in my life. And a pineapple margarita rimmed with cinnamon sugar. O. M. G.

When was the last time you were tipsy?
@ the Philadelphia Art Museum. We had a wine tasting there and they were pouring the most glorious barolo that’s ever crossed my lips. I had three glasses of that, plus a glass of a very peachy portofino. I practically slurred my way through the Cezanne exhibit. Come to think of it, the tipsyness totally explains my 9 pm craving for 7-11 nachos that night.

What is you favorite ever film?
The Princess Bride.

What is the biggest life lesson you’ve learned from your kids?
Everyone wants to be held when they cry, even if it’s by the person who’s made you cry.

What song can’t you get out of your head?
The Saturday morning School House Rock song about the Constitution.

What book do you know you should read but refuse to?
All of those Ayn Rand tomes. I just don’t get it.

What is your physical abnormality/abnormal physical ability?
I have a lazy eye. When I’m tired, drunk or getting my picture taken, it drifts up and to the right.

What are you doing to be “green”?
I am no Ed Begley Jr. However, on Jan. 1, 2008, I officially eschewed plastic bags. I’ve been pretty consistent in not using them. I also turned down my hot water heater. Whoot!
